Launch of Shopfront Guidelines

The Council is working with the business community on a range of initiatives to improve the environment of the town centres and support local businesses.

The appearance of shopfronts is particularly important in maintaining the appeal of our historic city to local people and visitors; so the Council has recently carried out a review of shopfronts in the City centre and found that a small number have been altered without permission and that these shopfronts detract from the appearance of the City.

The Council has informed us that they will be writing to those businesses where shopfronts have been altered without listed building consent within the next few days and will be requiring immediate action.

We are keen to support businesses with this process. A new Shop Front Leaflet has been prepared by the Council to highlight the importance of shopfronts and summarises the main messages that are included in the Council’s Shopfront Guidelines. As part of this process, we will be adding a shop front training webinar to our training programme – stay tuned for more details.
