Get to know your local…

Its time to get to know the faces behind our fabulous local businesses – this week we bring you an interview with local publican Emma Smith.

St Peter’s Street (nr. Westgate Towers)

Tell us a little bit about The Lady Luck…

Lady Luck has something for everyone. We call it a “Rock n Roll Bar” because it is heavily influenced by music but we are much, much more than that.

Vintage music posters and old vinyl adorn the walls and we have regular live music…usually original artists from throughout the UK and touring acts worldwide but also occasional tribute acts.

We are also known for our food. A large portion of our menu consists of homemade, unique dishes made with our own recipes.

We cater for everyone – with at least 16 vegan options plus a children’s menu and a gluten free menu too. Our customer base is wide, from students to families, young and old.

Why did you choose Canterbury to open your pub?

I have been Landlady of Lady Luck since it opened in 2009. I wanted to own a pub somewhere vibrant and diverse with a wide range of customers. Students and tourists keep Canterbury a thriving city.

What are you looking forward to most after lockdown?

I’m looking forward to welcoming back all our staff and customers, we have missed everyone so much.  I can’t wait to sit in the beer garden in summer with an ice cold cider!

What has kept you busy over lockdown?

I have been keeping busy with exercise, long walks and stay at home gym classes.  The staff and I are planning a Lady Luck quiz on zoom this weekend, we are all writing a round each on our specialist subjects, it should be fun!

How will you keep your customers safe on their return?

We already spent a lot of money after the first lockdown last spring, making the pub covid secure. There are plastic screens at the bar, tables are arranged to keep a safe social distance, there are 8 hand sanitizer stations around the building and we were providing table service.

Obviously we are yet to see if the guidelines will change again before we reopen, but we are willing to do whatever it takes to be able to welcome our customers back again.

How can customers support you right now?

We really do miss our customers so much, and New Year’s Eve in particular, which is a particular highlight on the Lady Luck calendar.

If customers would like to support us they can buy gift vouchers on our website; they are sold in multiples of £10 and are valid for 2 years.

We also have lots of merchandise available on there too, T Shirts, Badges, Stickers, Bottle Opener/ Lighter, Tote bags etc, prices start at £1.00. You can find it online here: Lady Luck Merchandise
