Gavin Esler In Conversation: Val McDermid

The In Conversation series continues with the ‘Queen of Crime’, Val McDermid who will be joining Gavin Esler live in the Gulbenkian Theatre at 18.30 with doors opening at 18.00. Val McDermid has sold over 17 million books to date across the globe and is translated into more than 40 languages. She is perhaps best-known for her Wire in the Blood series, featuring clinical psychologist Dr Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan, which was adapted for television starring Robson Green and Hermione Norris. She has written three other series: private detective Kate Brannigan, journalist Lindsay Gordon and, most recently, cold case detective Karen Pirie, whose debut appearance in The Distant Echo is soon to become a major ITV series.

A week-long music festival celebrating the end of the extra-curricular musical year is being held at the University of Kent. The Summer Music Week is running from Sunday 5 - Saturday 11 June and features a wide variety of music acts such as a beachside Big Band, recitals, choirs, a 'Music for a Summer's Day' concert plus much more. Canterbury Auction Galleries Antiques Awareness Evening

Each auction specialist will give a 20 minute Mini Master Class on their subject after which the tables will rotate giving each group of ten the opportunity to engage in each topic. Numbers strictly limited to 30 guests.  Please apply to chair@canterburysociety.org.uk by the 3rd June for tickets at £10 payable by cash or card on the door. Drinks and nibbles will be freely provided by the Canterbury Auction Galleries. All proceeds to Canterbury Society funds.

CANTERBURY REPAIR CAFE

Baptist Church, St George's Place

Repurpose and re-use broken items, appliances and more by repairing and fixing them (where possible) next Saturday 11 June, 10am-12.30pm at the Baptist Church, St George’s Place (opposite Waitrose). The Repair Café is a free community service, run entirely by skilled volunteers, who fix up a multitude of items including clothing, electricals, pottery, computers and bikes. Find out more HERE

LET THE BUSINESS GAMES COMMENCE! On the 16 June, as part of Canterbury Christ Church University’s Diamond Jubilee, the Vice-Chancellor’s Business Games will be taking place. It is a fantastic opportunity to gather together outside of the work environment and enjoy some friendly competition. CCCU Diamond Netwalking Club – Walk Two

Business partners, staff and students are invited to join the Enterprise Team in the second of four themed walks throughout our Jubilee year. Themed around Summer Solstice, the walk will involve meandering through our campus, learning about our facilities and exploring our green spaces, many of which are hidden and nestled away. We will talk about Canterbury Christ Church University’s commitment to sustainability and stroll past our campus hops, acting as a fitting precursor to the third walk in the Netwalking series. Finally, we will conclude by walking past our new Verena Holmes building and around the perimeter of the prison, before heading to our beautiful St Martins Priory Garden for an opportunity to network and enjoy tea and scones on the lawn.
