Black history 365: Professor Dame Elizabeth Nneka Anionwu (Live Streamed Event)

Canterbury Christ Church University is pleased to welcome Professor Dame Elizabeth Nneka Anionwu as part of our BH 365 programme. Elizabeth put a substantial amount of her life into her work as a nurse, health visitor and tutor working with black and minority ethnic communities in London. ‘People from diverse cultures are not always valued and still sometimes just seen as problems,’ she says. In 1979, she helped to establish in Brent the first nurse-led UK Sickle & Thalassaemia Screening and Counselling Centre. In 1988 she was awarded a PhD from the Institute of Education, University College London (UCL). From 1990-1997 she worked at the Institute of Child Health, UCL as a Lecturer then Senior Lecturer in Community Genetic Counselling. She has written extensively and is a co-author with Professor Karl Atkin of the book ‘The Politics of Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia’ published in 2001 by the Open University Press. Elizabeth was honoured with a Damehood (DBE) in the 2017 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for her services to nursing and the Mary Seacole Statue Appeal. Halloween Student Safety Hub

CITY CENTRE COMMUNITY SAFETY HUB A special Students’ Halloween Safety Hub will be set up outside Mcdonald's in St George's Street on Sunday 31 October between 7–10pm. This will be staffed by members of the police, enforcement , security, and other safety agencies to give advice and support to late night revelers.

The Awards celebrate projects nominated by the people who live alongside them and use them and who have a real understanding of their impact on the local area. Black History 365: In Conversation with Bernadette Hawkes (In-Venue Event)

Canterbury Christ Church University is pleased to welcome Bernadette Hawkes as part of our Black History 365 programme. This lecture was postponed from March 2021. Bernadette Hawkes is a semi-retired Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist; she has supervised trainee psychotherapists and colleagues in the voluntary sector. She was the Clinical Director at the Women’s Therapy Centre in London. She has lectured at IPSS and other organizations and has published several papers. For a time, she was the Book Reviews Editor and contributor to the International Journal of Psychotherapy. Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, she worked in the Probation Service at main-grade and as a Senior Probation Officer for 17 years. She is particularly interested in African-American & African Caribbean literature and its uses in psychotherapy. Bernadette is a volunteer with Age UK (Thanet) and is currently a music radio show presenter and writes a blog about her weekly radio show, which covers a wide range of musical genres. This is an in-venue event taking place in the Daphne Oram building, room DO.0.14. Seats are limited to adhere to current COVID-19 guidance, so please ensure that you book tickets in advance.

Christmas Lights Switch-On

Canterbury’s Christmas Light Up Parade – Friday 12 November (6-7pm) Head to Canterbury city centre on Friday 12 November(6-7pm) to enjoy the launch of this year’s Christmas festivities. To encourage social distancing, a ‘Light Up Parade’ is taking place, rather than a static stage. This means you will be able to see the lights go on from anywhere on the high street. The parade will be led by the fantastic No Limits Street Band. Following them will be the Lord Mayor and his family, Marlowe Panto cast members in a fairytale horse drawn carriage, Christmas characters and lanterns. Not forgetting our hard working ‘light up’ elves that will be making sure Canterbury is sparkling as we process. The parade will warm up with Christmas songs performed by Robbie White in the Marlowe Forcourt at 5.45pm, getting everyone in the Christmas spirit. The parade will the leave fom the Marlowe Theatre at 6pm, process up the high street, Rose Lane, finishing at Rose Square. Don’t forget, while you are in town, to pop along to the fantastic Christmas Market which will be open from 10am-7pm in St Georges Street, Whitefriars and Rose Lane.
