A Business Improvement District (BID) is a business-led, business-funded partnership, which undertakes to make improvements to a clearly defined geographical area, like Canterbury city centre. There are more than 180 BIDs nationally, including Brighton, Winchester, Guildford and Cambridge.

Canterbury Business Improvement District (BID) is an independent, business-led, not-for-profit initiative voted for by the businesses of Canterbury in July 2014 and again in July 2019 for another five-year term. Nationally, there are over 340 BIDs in the UK, including three in Kent (Canterbury was the first), investing over £150 million every year, giving business an independent voice and investing in business-led initiatives. Our mission is to help support and improve the trading environment in Canterbury city centre. BID projects are focussed on making Canterbury a vibrant, exciting, well connected and successful business community, and an attractive, clean, green, safe, enjoyable destination for everyone.
