From 2-12 September, for the first time ever, Canterbury BID hosted a dedicated “Welcome Back to School” programme for young people (aged 11-18) as they returned to school, commuting through the bus station at the top end of the Canterbury High Street.
The goal was to ensure young people felt a genuine sense of belonging in Canterbury — that it’s their city too. By offering engaging and positive activities, the initiative aimed to create welcoming experiences, foster opportunities, and support local businesses through diversionary programs that help reduce antisocial behaviour.
This event was made possible thanks to Kent Police and Canterbury City Council for funding, Rockhopper Events for support with music and the Prince of Wales Youth Club for two weeks of activities.
Each day from 3-5.30pm St George’s Street and Whitefrairs offered visitors a mix of entertainment, creativity and sports designed to engage young people and bring energy to the city including:

🎶 Live Music – performances from local artists and bands
🎯 Spin the Wheel – with prizes from businesses (super popular!)
🎲 Games Hub – games and challenges
🎨 Workshops – creative hands-on activities
🏀 Sports Activities – football, cricket, taekwondo, mixed martial arts, archery and ax throwing (soft, of course!)

We’ve had a great response to our feedback wall from the young people and will follow up with a survey with the business community to understand the impact.

Huge thanks to partners who joined in and delivered a fantastic programme:
