Canterbury City Council will be activating the city centre bollards on Monday 23 November. The project is starting with a phased launch so unforeseen problems can be fixed along the way and people can be on the ground to help drivers during key periods. Canterbury will welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay on Thursday 7 July as it makes its way around the UK ahead of the Commonwealth Games this summer. The baton will be carried by a number of baton holders on a route across the city, concluding with a community event within the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral. Canterbury City Council is leading the organisation of the Canterbury section of the baton relay and is working on a series of complementary events, potentially around sport and music, to coincide with its time in the city. Each year, thousands of people visit and enjoy the beauty of the River Stour, the second longest waterway in Kent and once a key Roman trade route connecting Britain to Europe. People picnic along its banks, rejoice in a relaxing river tour or walk along the footpaths that offer glimpses of the river. To celebrate and find out more, join the community for a wonderful week of free river-related events walk, talks, arts & crafts, river dipping and loads more to help you learn more about this beautiful river. In January 2023, Canterbury City Council were awarded money from the Levelling Up Fund to deliver our Connected Canterbury – Unlocking the Tales of England project. As part of this project they are proposing to make changes to the public highway at five separate locations in Canterbury. changes near the Westgate Towers and creation of a Westgate Square. changes near the clocktower and creation of a St George’s Square. changes along St George’s Lane and to the bus station. changes to the pedestrian and cycle routes to the Norman Castle. changes to footways on Pound Lane between The Causeway and St Peter’s Lane. CCC want to know what you think of our current plans so that, wherever possible, they can incorporate your feedback into the designs. They are holding a drop-in event where you can come and talk to them about the proposals on Saturday 23 September, 10am to 3pm at The Guildhall, St Peter’s Place, Canterbury, CT1 2DB.
This year's dinner dance will be held at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, Canterbury on Saturday 23 March, 7-11.30pm and held in aid of the Lord Mayor’s chosen charity, Pilgrims Hospices, Tickets cost £50 each, which will include a three course dinner, entertainment and a raffle. The countdown to the reopening of Sturry Road Park & Ride on Monday 1 April has begun. District residents with a ANPR parking account will receive a 20% reduction, making the daily price £3.20 for a car with up to six passengers. New colour-coded car park bands have also been introduced to help motorists plan their journey and pay less. Find out more
