Water main upgrade in St George’s Street, Canterbury

South East Water logo

A burst last year in St George’s Street, Canterbury near Superdrug and Beaverbrooks resulted in businesses not receiving any water for a short period and disruption to the city centre while repairs were carried out. As such South East Water is planning a project to upgrade a small section of water main.

Work on the £24,000 scheme to install a new pipe, approximately 25 metres in length, will take place along St George’s Street outside Poundland and Superdrug. A further piece of work will also be carried out in St George’s Street at a point close to the exit to the bus station between Wilko and Fenwick. The project is due to start on Monday 11 January and take about six weeks to complete.

As the work is due to take place in a prominent location in the city South East Water hosted a meeting on Thursday 12 November at the Westgate Hall to provide more information and to explain how they plan to limit disruption to businesses and customers.

Further information regarding the scheme can be found at: southeastwater.co.uk/Canterbury

How can South East Water ensure this work is done with minimum disruption to you?
Due to the high number of utilities within the ground traditional trenching techniques will be used. Construction will be carried out in short sections, with one section being returned to its original state before the working area is moved along to the next stage. Pedestrian and delivery access to shops and properties will be maintained at all times and all businesses will be open as usual.

When is the work due to start?
Construction is due to start on 11 January and take about six weeks to complete. Work will take place during normal working hours Monday to Saturday, however occasional overnight work may be required. South East Water have planned to undertake this project in January away from the busy Christmas shopping period.
